What Causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is a roaring, pulsing, hissing, buzzing, ringing or other sound that occurs inside your ears and no body can hear it except you. You can hear the sound inside your head, it may drive you nuts, but no one else can hear it. When it comes to what causes tinnitus, the bad news is the list is a mile long. There are many different causes of tinnitus. Therefore, it is important to determine first if you have tinnitus and second what to do about it. This usually requires a trip to the doctor.

There is a significant difference between tinnitus which is extremely bothersome, chronic or constant, and the occasional ringing in your ear. Ringing sounds in the ears every now and then is perfectly normal. Tinnitus that requires treatment occurs more frequently in men than in women, although no one knows why. When trying to pinpoint your tinnitus cause, your doctor will give you an exam, ask you questions about your health, family medical history and symptoms, and try to diagnose what is causing the problem.

Tinnitus can be caused by all sorts of things for example too much earwax can cause it, as can too much alcohol consumption. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is another factor. There are a host of diseases and disorders for which tinnitus is a symptom, like Meniere's disease and thyroid disorders to name just two. The cause of your tinnitus will determine the treatment method taken. For simple cases like earwax buildup, irrigation of the ears by your doctor or at home can fix the problem. There are also over the counter ear drops that can be used to clean out the ears at home over a period of several days. These formulations contain peroxide and help loosen and remove the buildup.

If the tinnitus your doctor has diagnosed is a bit more serious than earwax, he or she may recommend various treatment options. For example, a tinnitus cause of high blood pressure may require medication, exercise and a healthy diet. Problems within the ear may require surgery from an ear specialist. Other disorder such as malnutrition and alcoholism have their own means of being treated. While determining a tinnitus cause may be difficult, the majority of ringing in the ears is nothing to get worked up over unless it keeps happening or doesn't stop.
