What is Pulsatile Tinnitus?
It is very common for most people to experience a ringing sound in their ears at some point in their lifetime. This is actually a normal occurrence that happens to many people and is quite harmless. However, there is a condition called tinnitus where the ringing, roaring or pulsing is constant or chronic. Pulsatile tinnitus is a form of this condition where you can hear and feel a pulsing in your ears that may correspond to your heartbeat. Nonpulsatile tinnitus is different because it is simply a sound heard inside the ears such as a hissing, ringing, roaring or buzzing. For some reason unknown to researchers, men are more likely to suffer from the problem of tinnitus than women are.
Sometimes if you are unlucky, you can have tinnitus that can be felt as well as heard, this can be twice as unpleasant. Tinnitus that throbs in your ears is often due to ear canal muscle movements, blood flow issues around the ear area and various other medical problems. The causes of tinnitus are practically endless, the list ranges from earwax buildup to rare diseases. For most people, the problem is not serious enough to require surgery or a dramatic treatment regimen. The first step in reducing or curing the problem is to pinpoint what causes it.
At this point in time its well worth remembering that your doctor can be a real ally in your fight against this aggravating condition. He or she can take into account your symptoms, medical history, current condition and other factors to try and diagnose why you are experiencing a pulsing tinnitus in your ear or both ears. Once the problem is found, treatment can begin. If the tinnitus is something as simple as earwax buildup your doctor can recommend an OTC product or irrigate your ears in the office. For problems like hypertension or various disorders, more intensive treatment may be required.
Pulsatile tinnitus in many cases has something to do with blood flow around the face and neck area. This may be caused by high blood pressure or another factor. Changing your lifestyle, taking any medications prescribed to you and not smoking can help. Your doctor may refer you to an ear specialist who may better be able to treat your tinnitus issue. While extremely annoying, tinnitus is not life threatening on its own. However, it is important to diagnose and treat the cause, which may or may not be serious. If your tinnitus is infrequent, you should mention it at your next annual checkup but it is probably of no serious medical concern.
