How the American Tinnitus Association Can Help You
One should note that tinnitus can get better and even go away, but there is no such thing as a true cure for it. There are treatments and remedies, but the cure is still being sought. It is the goal of the American Tinnitus Association not only to help find that cure but also to provide support for those suffering with the condition known as tinnitus. In layman's terms, tinnitus is a ringing in the ears. Sometimes, it can be a lot more than that.
When someone suffers from tinnitus, they describe the sounds inside their ears as a whistling, roaring, humming or buzzing. Pusatile tinnitus is a type of this condition where you can feel and hear a pulsing in your ears. Most everyone will experience ringing in the ears at some point – in fact, most of us have ringing in our ears daily that we don't even notice. This normal bodily function turns into tinnitus when the ringing becomes loud, distracting, chronic, constant, or is associated with hearing impairment. The elderly often suffer from tinnitus because of nerve damage in the ears which also causes poor hearing.
Responsible listening is one of the most important messages the ATA hopes to send out. This means, do not listen to music, use firearms, work at a noisy factory or do anything else that is too loud without ear protection. Many cases of tinnitus are due to hearing damage caused by loud sounds. The ATA has an interactive video on their site called 'How Loud is Too Loud?' that can help you determine when you need protection for your ears. Preventing tinnitus in the first place is so much easier than getting it, then trying to get rid of it.
If you log on to the American Tinnitus Association website, you can find FAQs and tips for tinnitus sufferers. One thing I learned was that out of the 50 million tinnitus sufferers, 12 million find their case severe enough to seek help for. There are all kinds of helpful facts for tinnitus sufferers and their loved ones available through the ATA. If you or someone you care about suffers from tinnitus, this is an association they should look into. At the least, you can learn more about the ear condition called tinnitus, and what you can do about it.
