An Introduction to Tinnitus Retraining Therapy
Tinnitus retraining therapy, or TRT as it is more commonly known, is a fantastic way for tinnitus sufferers to seek relief. Through tinnitus retraining, it is possible to become accustomed to the sounds of tinnitus so that they are no longer a problem. The brain is very plastic in nature, which means it can be trained to respond a certain way. In other words, you can teach an old dog new tricks, and you can teach yourself not to be bothered by tinnitus anymore. That is the whole foundation of TRT.
It's quite simple, there are two main facets of TRT – talk therapy and sound therapy. With the sound therapy, the patient becomes so accustomed to the sound of tinnitus that it is no longer bothersome. It is simply another noise, like the humming of an air conditioner or the chirping of a bird – no cause for discomfort or alarm. The talk therapy portion not only helps teach self therapy techniques and exercises, it also examines your attitudes towards tinnitus and any mental blocks to treatment you may have.
You may ask yourself, does TRT have a high success rate? according to initial scientific studies, the answer is yes. However, it is still seen as a temporary fix rather than a cure. If a person does not continue with their therapy or allows themselves to fall back on old thoughts, patterns and habits tinnitus can become just as bothersome as before. In other words, it is possible to relapse with TRT, but you can always get back on the horse and try again. You may need a refresher course or two in order to reinforce what you learned before about disregarding your tinnitus.
There are many benefits to tinnitus retraining therapy. Firstly, there are no drugs involved. While a person could be treated with a prescription medication by their doctor at the same time they are going through TRT, there are no medicines required in order for tinnitus retraining therapy to work. If patients are depressed or anxious, doctors may find certain medications help lift the fog and allow the TRT to work better. Because TRT does deal so much with the brain and its perception of your tinnitus, it is important to be in good mental condition if you want good results.
