Tinnitus: Ringing in the Ears or Something More Serious?

It is a known fact that almost everyone will, at some point during their lives, hear ringing sounds in their ears. This can be distressing if you don't realize that this is a normal function of your body. Only when the ringing or other sound becomes extremely bothersome or chronic should you consider tinnitus to be the problem. There is no cure for tinnitus, but there are lots of different remedies. The most important thing you can do is take your tinnitus ringing to the doctor for an examination.

When you go and see your doctor, he or she will ask about your family medical history, your medical history, and perform an exam including looking in your ears. Sometimes, tinnitus is caused by nothing more serious than a buildup of ear wax. This is something you can treat at home with ear drops and an irrigation device, but it's probably better to go ahead and let your doctor handle it. They can extract the wax with a tool or irrigator right in their office and this often clears up the tinnitus problem.

Another cause of ringing in the ears, can be a buildup of fluid in the middle ear or an ear infection. In this case the doctor may prescribe antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected. Often for viral infections nothing is given except for pain. Ear drops may be recommended, and your doctor may give you some advice regarding home remedies for soothing infected ears. Once the infection goes away, the ringing in your ears will probably subside.

As we age, we sometimes experience nerve damage in the ears, this causes the ringing sound and also hearing loss. Seniors aren't the only victims, however. Kids, teens and adults can all suffer from hearing loss and tinnitus, most often due to exposure to noise that is too loud. It is extremely important to wear ear protection when in loud locations.

The tinnitus ringing in the ears you are experiencing could be caused by any one or a number of factors, or something else entirely. Rarely the cause is serious, although it is better safe than sorry when it comes to getting checked out. There are life threatening causes of tinnitus, but they are very rare. Usually tinnitus is easily recognized and can be treated through a variety of methods by your doctor or hearing specialist.
