Types of Tinnitus Therapy

The ringing sound that you hear in your ears may be due to tinnitus, a condition that may be pulsatile or nonpulsatile. Pulsatile tinnitus throbs in your ears, while nonpulsatile tinnitus is just the sound. This sound can be a high pitched ringing, buzzing or roaring that no one can hear but you. Luckily, this is a problem many people have now and then, but if yours is serious enough to be labeled as tinnitus, you will be glad to know that there are a variety of different tinnitus therapy methods available these days.

If you find that the ringing sounds in your ears dont stop, its time to go and see your doctor. He or she can look in your ears, take all your vital signs, try to determine if there is an underlying medical cause. If they cannot solve the mystery or treat the problem, they may refer you to an ear specialist. Try to find a specialist who has ample experience dealing with tinnitus cases. There are so many different causes of tinnitus, from the benign to the serious. This is why diagnosing the cause is so important.

There are a variety of ways to treat the underlying cause of tinnitus. For example, if your tinnitus is caused by a blockage or buildup of earwax (this is more common than you might think) your doctor can irrigate your ears in his or her office and remove the wax. If irrigation doesn't do the trick your doctor has medical tools with which he or she can remove the wax manually with minimal discomfort to you. Now, if your tinnitus is happening because your blood pressure is high, your doctor may tell you to lose weight, exercise or even take medication to solve the problem.

For tinnitus sufferers, a new type of tinnitus therapy is known as TRT, or tinnitus retraining therapy. This type of therapy utilizes both sound training and talk therapy to change the patient's reaction to the tinnitus itself. By exposing them to special noise generators, the therapists teach the patients to get used to the sound. The goal is for the patient to become desensitized to the sound. While this may not work in all tinnitus sufferers, it may provide relief for some. Ask your doctor if TRT is the right kind of therapy for you.
